Hurricane Prep / Storm Checks

Hurricanes and tropical storms punish the weak links first: lines, chafe points, canvas, hatches, shore power, and bilge systems. We help you execute a clear plan before weather arrives—and document conditions after.

What We Do

YachtWatchers provides dockside storm preparation assistance and post-storm condition checks. We focus on practical securement, risk reduction, and documentation—based on your marina rules, your boat type, and your priorities.

Pre-Storm Prep (Typical Checklist)

  • Dock lines & chafe: adjust for surge, add/inspect chafe gear, verify cleats and leads
  • Fenders & boards: reposition for expected wind direction and piling contact
  • Canvas & loose gear: remove/secure biminis, sails/covers, cushions, deck items where practical
  • Hatches & openings: check seals, close/secure lockers and ports, reduce water intrusion pathways
  • Bilge readiness: confirm pump operation cues and bilge condition; alert you if anything looks suspect
  • Shore power: verify connection status and discuss your preferred storm strategy (as marinas vary)
  • Photo documentation: “before” photos for your records

Storm Watch & Post-Storm Checks

  • Post-storm walk: lines, chafe, fenders, dock hazards, obvious damage
  • Onboard check (as access allows): bilge condition, water intrusion signs, shore power status
  • Documentation: time-stamped photos and a clear summary of urgent vs non-urgent findings
  • Coordination: help connect you with marina staff or trusted providers if repairs/haulout are needed

Haul-Out & Storage Coordination (Optional)

Some owners choose to haul out or move to more protected storage when time allows. We can help coordinate timing, communication, and documentation with your marina/yard based on availability.

Service Area

Clear Lake, Kemah, Galveston Bay, and nearby Gulf Coast marinas. See Locations for details.

FAQs

When should I start hurricane prep?
Earlier than most people think. Many hurricane guides recommend preparing or moving the boat when a storm becomes a substantial possibility, not waiting until the last moment.

Can you guarantee my boat won’t be damaged?
No. Storm prep reduces risk but cannot guarantee outcomes. Marinas also commonly state that owners are responsible for their own vessels and that checklists reduce damage possibility but don’t guarantee it.

Do you remove sails/canvas and deck gear?
When practical and safe, yes—removing or securing movable equipment is commonly recommended in hurricane preparation guidance. We’ll confirm what you want removed, where it should be stored, and what your marina allows.

Do you disconnect shore power?
Storm strategies vary by marina and boat. We’ll follow your written preference and marina guidance. If your marina has a published storm plan, we’ll align to it.

What do I receive?
A documented report with time-stamped photos: before-storm preparation (if requested) and post-storm condition notes, plus urgent action items.
